The TMRP brings together a number of national and international networks, institutions and partners undertaking clinical trials and trials methodology research. One funded studentship, starting in 2019/20, is available to UK/EU nationals. The studentship will attract an annual tax-free stipend of £14,057 for up to 3 years, and cover UK/EU tuition fees.

You should hold a first degree equivalent to at least a UK 2:1 honours degree in a relevant subject. A Masters level qualification is desirable. Candidates whose first language is not English must provide evidence that their English language is sufficient to meet the specific demands of their study, the Faculty minimum requirements are:

  • British Council IELTS - score of 6.5 overall, with no element less than 6.0
  • TOEFL iBT - overall score of 92 (listening and reading element no less than 21; writing element no less than 22; speaking element no less than 23).

We welcome discussions with potential students for any of the following topics:

  1. Applied health informatics in complex intervention trials (Supervisors: Farrin)
    Evaluate the use of routine data or registries alongside existing clinical trials of complex interventions for identification, recruitment or follow-up of patients or interpretation of trial results
    Academic background – strong quantitative skills e.g. statistics, health economics, mathematics or similar

  2. Complex interventions trial design & analysis (Supervisors: Farrin, Walwyn, Wilson)
    Investigate innovative trials methodology in mathematical modelling of complex interventions; designing trials to optimise complex interventions; or efficient early phase complex intervention evaluations.
    Academic background – statistics, mathematics

  3. Causal interference in complex intervention trials (Supervisors: Farrin, Walwyn)
    Explore causal inference methods in factorial trials
    Academic background – statistics, mathematics

  4. Intervention implementation in complex intervention trials (Supervisors: Farrin)
    Investigate methods for measuring and optimising intervention implementation, evaluating factors influencing intervention delivery and patient outcomes, in stroke rehabilitation, elderly care or care homes trials.
    Academic background – strong qualitative or quantitative skills, plus an interest in mixed methods
