Several post graduate research (PGR) studentships (MD/MPhil/PhD) are available in the Division of Cancer and Genetics (DCG), Cardiff University School of Medicine to start in 2023. We are looking for suitable candidates that have personal scholarships or self-funding.

The School of Medicine is one of the largest in the United Kingdom and a major international center for research and teaching. Our researchers are involved in cutting-edge science and world-class research in the field of medicine that have a real impact on people’s lives. The School is home to over 230 postgraduate research students who benefit from a vibrant community of scientific endeavor. The Schools aim is to enable our postgraduate researchers become excellent and enthusiastic scientists with the ability to contribute to the wider scientific community.

Background about the Division of Cancer and Genetics

The Division of Cancer and Genetics (DCG) is one of five research Divisions in the School of Medicine, based at the Heath Park Campus, Cardiff. It has around 121 staff and 45 PGR students, housed in several research buildings with well-equipped laboratories.

Researchers within DCG also have access to bioinformatic support through the Wales Gene Park, and the potential to collaborate with colleagues across the College of Biological Life Sciences as well as in the NHS All Wales Medical Genetics Service, Wales Cancer Research Centre and Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre. As well as being a major contributor to School educational and research events, DCG has it's own seminar program where PGR students through to group leaders present their research. There is also an annual DCG-PGR research symposium, which features student talks and social events led by students.

Training Environment

All PGR students in the School of Medicine undergo a one-week training course in research methods as part of their School induction week, which will have access to a large array of support materials and courses on research skills. In addition, DCG hosts its’ own half-day symposium introducing new students to the cutting-edge research that is ongoing within the Division. The School of Medicine currently has a 86.5% on time submission rate and 100% completion rate for PhD submissions.

Application Process

We are seeking enthusiastic and motivated students with an interest in Cancer or genomic research. Applicants should possess a minimum of an upper second-class Honours degree, master's degree, or equivalent in a relevant subject.

Applicants whose first language is not English are normally expected to meet the minimum University requirements (e.g. 6.5 IELTS)

There is a box at the top right of the page labelled ‘Apply’, please ensure you select the correct ‘Qualification’ (Doctor of Philosophy), the correct ‘Mode of Study’ (Full Time) and the correct ‘Start Date’ (i.e. April/October 2023). This will take you to the application portal.

In the ‘Research Proposal’ section of the application enter the name of the project you are applying to. Candidates must submit the following information:

  • Supporting statement
  • CV
  • Qualification certificates
  • Proof of Funding i.e. a letter of intent from your sponsor or confirmation of self-funded status.
  • References x2
  • Proof of English language (if applicable)
