PhD studentships at the Wellcome-MRC Institute of Metabolic Science

Applications are invited for PhD studentships based at the Wellcome-MRC Institute of Metabolic Science-Metabolic Research Laboratories (IMS-MRL) and its embedded MRC Metabolic Diseases Unit, a cross-departmental research institute on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

At the IMS, we aim to develop and train the next generation of scientists with the knowledge and skills to make real advances in understanding the fundamental mechanisms through which metabolic health is maintained and how it is disturbed in obesity and related metabolic and endocrine diseases.

Scientific approaches include fields as diverse as biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, physiology, neuroendocrinology, systems biology, computational biology and population genetics, with the wide range of training and researcher development activities available maximising competitiveness for future opportunities.

All students have a principal supervisor and an advisor, and take part in a career development programme that includes

  • weekly ‘Hot Topics’ and technical sessions
  • seminars by local, national and international speakers
  • professional skills training courses

all designed to further develop both research and professional skills.

Students are encouraged to present their research at group meetings and seminars within the IMS-MRL and at local, national and international conferences and symposia.

Student feedback 2018:

I thoroughly enjoy working at the Metabolic Research Laboratories. The facilities are excellent and there are lots of talks from inspirational speakers from both within and outside the department to increase your breadth of knowledge. The strong community of students, senior researchers and administration staff here at the Metabolic Research Laboratories is amazing and there is a range of support available to students during their project and beyond.

Please note that if you wish to be considered for University of Cambridge funding competitions then you must submit your application form by 7th January 2020.
