PhD Studentships in Offshore Renewable Energy (Mechanical Engineering with SGRE)

PhD Studentships in Offshore Renewable Energy (Mechanical Engineering with SGRE)

The Wind & Marine Energy Systems & Structures (WAMSS) is an EPSRC-funded Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT), led by the University of Strathclyde, working collaboratively with Universities of Oxford and Edinburgh. The Centre aims to train the next generation of technical leaders, through EngD and PhD graduates, for the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) sector. Students complete 1 year of taught classes followed by 3 years of research.

There are currently industrial studentships available at the University of Strathclyde (this being one of them) in collaboration with Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE). This studentship covers fill university tuition fees and offers a very competitive stipend to help with living costs for the 4 year programme.

These positions will start in October 2023. These positions are suitable for high calibre candidates with a strong background in Mechanical/Manufacturing/Structural Engineering.

Applications are welcome from students with an interest in the research areas described below:

Wind Energy Structural Design:

Example research topics:

  • Modelling of structural loads (fatigue & extreme)
  • Composite materials: structural capabilities

Wind Turbine Manufacturing Automation:

Example research topics:

  • Scaling highly manual production to higher volumes/cycle times
  • Process robustness
  • Decentralization of manufacturing

Wind Turbine Structural Health Monitoring:

Example research topics:

  • Sensor robustness and accuracy
  • Failure prediction modelling and predictive maintenance

Assembly and Construction:

Example Research topics:

  • Process improvements in on-site assembly
  • Lead time reduction in assembly processes
  • Process robustness

This SGRE studentship is open to UK and international applicants with a first class, or strong upper second class, honours degree in Mechanical/Manufacturing/Structural Engineering.
