Professional Doctorate in
Education (EdD)

The course encourages the doctoral student to explore a key area in educational research and practice. Within this context, you will have the opportunity to demonstrate critical evaluation of your professional area and how your doctoral studies fit within and contribute to moving their professional area forward. You will undertake analysis, synthesis, evaluation and application autonomously and with critical awareness.

The theme will be examined from three perspectives:

  1. The participants’ own professional learning;
  2. The organisational, cultural, social contexts of education;
  3. The leadership role in supporting communities in education.

The key tasks are to understand a substantial body of knowledge at the forefront of the discipline. You will use the outcomes of this exploration to generate new knowledge and improvement.

Discipline Specific modules

Communities and Education

This module aims to provide you with the theoretical knowledge about the social context of education and apply the outcomes of this knowledge on research and enquiry in your professional area. Specifically, it aims:

  • To refine your approach to communities and education in light of the literature and exploration of professional practice.
  • To investigate an understanding of impact of research and enquiry on professional practice in the social context of education, and to develop an appropriate theory of change.

Policy and Change in Education

This module will develop your capacity to drive transformative change within an organisation or educational setting, by exploring the contexts of leadership, policy and institutional/organisational change.

The aims of the module are:

  • To allow you to understand the role of education in both society and policy making, and the relationship between research and educational policy.
  • To encourage you to explore your personal values and educational philosophy.
  • To explore theories of change and models for facilitating continuous improvement, leadership and personal impact to act as a change agent, as well as the context for institutional change.

The module also will prepare you for extended forms of research within the practice setting. A major outcome will be that you will enhance your own professional skills by influencing others in the development of their organisation/institution.
