Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies is a public university institute - with special autonomy - working in the field of applied sciences.

Located in the historical centre of Pisa, the University provides Bachelor and Master degree courses, as well as PhD programs, University and International Masters and Advanced Education. The high level of research of the Sant'Anna School is recognized by international rankings, for instance the "Times Higher Education" ranked in 2019 the school as the best Italian University and among the best 10 young universities in the World.

Within Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies, the Institute of Management is active in the field of management in the context of private and public organizations as support to a renewed entrepreneurship, in a synergetic perspective, among business, institutions and research. IdM is the result of a long-term cultural project with particular reference to the management of innovation, sustainability and healthcare. International PhD in Management – Innovation, Sustainability and Healthcare

In line with the standards of excellence pursued by the School and by the Institute of Management, the International PhD in Management is a three-year training path leading to research activity in the public and private domain and skilled managerial jobs at public and private organizations. The program examines the main themes of management, together with essential teachings, especially from a methodological viewpoint, for the conduct of research activities in the field of social sciences:

  • the management of innovation processes and the international competitiveness of firms, institutions, as well as local, regional and national systems. Research conducted by MAIN researchers aims to describe, understand, explain and facilitate innovation management in private companies, public administrations and cities/regions. Innovation processes are here interpreted from a technological, managerial, cultural and institutional point of view;
  • the management of sustainability in public institutions, private companies and wide territorial areas is specifically focused on resource efficiency management, corporate social responsibility, environmental policies. The Sustainability Management research group combines the knowledge of business management and policy making with the principles of sustainability, through scientific research and empirical investigations;
  • the management of healthcare systems, throughout international comparisons on governance models and policies to support policy makers and managers to improve performance as well as the strategies to set priorities and orient behavior in complex systems. Additional scholarships are addressed for students interested in healthcare.

Candidates wish to take part in, should apply in the dedicated section of the School website within the date specified by the Ph.D. program (usually the deadline is in May). Different scholarships are yearly available and every year one position is reserved for NON-EU candidates. Every PhD student has a full three-year scholarship and free access to the canteen.

A special “David Teece Scholarship” is available for candidates that want to participate to the PhD approaching the research through the lens of dynamic capabilities theory.

In the heart of Tuscany, Pisa is the city of science and history. At every corner of the historical city center you will find a department of one of the three public universities or a piece of the ancient history of the city. A lot of students live here, so you can find concerts, art exhibitions and vibrant night events. Pisa is also well connected to Florence, Siena, the seaside (15min) and Rome, Milano and Venice by high-speed trains. The airport of Pisa hosts low-cost companies, and it is very easy to travel across south of Italy and Europe.
