Our brand new Barbara Hepworth Building is a beacon of innovation – an open studio environment equipped with state of the art facilities and spaces for collaborative thinking and a vibrant community for all of our students and staff to engage in, offering an environment that transcends disciplines and acts as a gallery, exhibition space and broadcasting station.
Designed for experimentation and our new transdisciplinary pedagogical ethos, you will have the opportunity to develop, curate and exhibit your work in innovative spaces, utilising fully extensive and leading workshop facilities such as 3D printers for rapid prototyping and modelling, laser cutters, Wacom drawing tablets, Virtual reality and motion tracking sensors, print and dye, Shima Seiki Whole Garment knitting machine, Brother and Dubied knitting machines, Computerised Arm looms, Table looms and fCCI loommaker library, digital print, photography studios (including Roto-lighting found in Pinewood studios), advanced 3D technologies, digital print centre, specialist studios and software and the ability to get access to all facilities and much more. Your work on these machines will be supported by our specialist technical team.
The Phidias lab will bring state of the art visualisation to the School of Art, Design and Architecture. For the first time in the School, Students will benefit from the potential of developing and prototyping 3D models in an immersive VR environment, together with having the space and facility to experiment with emergent visualisation technology. It will enable students to showcase their work digitally in a controlled environment with opportunities for collaborative learning and state of the art motion capture. Including a Barco f90 3-faced cave/wide immersive environment, Vicon motion capture and tracking facilities, Wireless HTC Vive Pro, Digital experimentation spaces and 4x2 TV matrix and digital display wall.
In addition, the building has been designed with a commuting student in mind. We have lockers and 4 kitchenettes across the building, which come equipped with a microwave, fridge and kettle facilities for students to use.
