Current PhD opportunities

Our brilliant PhD students make Sheffield what it is – a research powerhouse, a multidisciplinary community, a place where ideas matter. Postgraduate research is a life changing experience: intellectually, professionally and personally. You’ll be supervised by experts and work with researchers who have an international reputation for excellence.

New products start with a materials innovation. The Department of Materials Science and Engineering discovers and develops new materials, gaining fundamental scientific understanding and creating new manufacturing processes, and we then work with our partners to implement these ideas in practical situations. Our research covers battery materials, materials for fusion and fission reactors, and dealing with waste safely, concrete with lower environmental impact, materials for medicine, and bioinspired and biological materials, and many more areas.

As a PhD student you will meet like-minded people who are passionate for research across the entire University. You’ll gain free, personalised skills training, expert careers advice and become part of an inspiring, collaborative group of researchers from across the disciplines.

PhD student at the Centre for Doctoral Training for Nuclear Energy Futures

“Sheffield is a great university city, just the right size to always have something to discover but not so big that its overwhelming!

Access to the Peak District makes it the most outdoors friendly university in the UK – whether that’s climbing, canoeing, caving or any other variety of outdoor sports Sheffield is an amazing place to get started!

It's also an inspiring city in terms of culture, with a huge amount of high quality student run nights out with all music genres, exceptional food all across the city and all at a great price. Sheffield is easily one of the cheapest cities to live in as a student, which certainly has its advantages.”

PhD Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering

“The beauty of working in science is that no two days are the same. There's something evolving, and you're the closest witness to it. You face new challenges every day, which motivates you to push your own limits. Like all other creative processes, science is tough, but it's worth everything when you see that hopefully, your efforts could one day be a remedy to someone.

In the field of biomaterials and tissue engineering, this hope depends on whether cells like to live in the material you've developed. Thanks to great laboratory facilities, you can monitor them instantly, in a variety of ways. So, when I see that cells are happy, I am happy too!”
