Study for a fully-funded PhD or EngD in Advanced Metallic Systems to explore innovative materials and manufacturing routes to increase sustainability and performance
We welcome applications from highly motivated individuals working across an Engineering discipline or a STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths) subject.
Fully funded projects are available working with industrial partners through a collective of world-leading institutions for research.
Based across the UK and ROI, the Advanced Metallic Systems Centre for Doctoral Training develops the next generation of metallurgy professionals to create, shape, and deliver the national vision for metals manufacturing supporting the path to net-zero.
Applications are to advertised projects only with predetermined industrial partners and doctoral supervisors.

Applicants should have (or expect to obtain by the start date) at least a good 2:1 degree in a Bachelors or Masters in an engineering, science or maths discipline, or an IELTS qualification above 7.0.
For all graduates joining the programme, an initial 6-month conversion course ensures all students are well versed in materials and metallurgy practices. Following this, you’ll begin your 3.5-year doctoral project, alongside an Industrial Partner and Doctoral Supervisor.
Professional skills and EDI (Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion) training will also run for the duration of the course. The versatile and cross-disciplinary focus of the programme ensures students are equipped with the skill set required to meet the most complex emerging challenges within the metals sector.
The world-class research and training environments of the Advanced Metallic Systems CDT are enhanced by the programme’s strategic partnerships across The University of Sheffield, The University of Manchester, Dublin City University, and University College Dublin.
Throughout the course of your studies, you’ll work collaboratively across all institutions. Partnerships with these institutions grant students access to world-class facilities and equipment, most notably the Henry Royce Institute and the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) in the UK, and the I-Form Manufacturing Research Centre in Dublin, ROI.
UK Projects (Universities of Sheffield and Manchester)
14 full (fees and stipend) scholarships are available for 2023 entry.
Our scholarships provide a stipend at the UKRI rate (£17,668 in 2022-23) plus a top-up and tuition fees, for 4-years. The stipend top-up for both the PhD and EngD projects is £5,000 per year.
ROI Projects (Dublin City University and University College Dublin)
The ROI Partnership in the AMS CDT is funded by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) which covers full fees and stipend costs for four years. SFI also funds materials and project-related costs.
5 full (fees and stipend) scholarships are available for 2023 entry.
International Fee Scholarships (Universities of Sheffield and Manchester)
International Fee Scholarships are available in the AMS CDT [Universities of Sheffield and Manchester] for 2023 entry.
It is a highly competitive scheme, which closes to applications on 1st December 2022. You must apply for your project via the PGR Application System at the Universities of Sheffield and Manchester before 1st December, with a suitable English Language qualification, to be considered. Applicants are ranked by academic merit (average GPA).
A selection will be invited to online interview, in January 2023, with the recruitment panel. The panel will select the International Scholarship candidates following the online interviews.
Please note that International Scholarship offers may be delayed, as UKRI operates a 'Quota of Home-Fee Candidates' systems, therefore we cannot give any indication of the timeline for offers.
All International Fee Candidates must secure ATAS and a 4-year student via before they can be registered at the host University and start the AMS CDT Programme.
