2019 Doctoral Studentships

The Turing Doctoral Studentships are an exceptional opportunity for talented individuals looking to embark on a career in the rapidly emerging field of data science. The Institute offers a number of places each year to graduate students to complete a PhD through the Institute and one of our university partners. Students are invited to apply to one of our university partners where, if successful, they will be registered and supervised. Students will then spend time at both their home university and the Institute headquarters at the British Library in London. About us

We are the national institute for data science, created in 2015 in response to a need for greater investment in data science research. The Institute is partnered with Newcastle University, Queen Mary University of London, University College London, and the universities of Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Exeter, Leeds, Manchester, Oxford, Southampton and Warwick.

What are we looking for?

There is no standard Turing student. We are looking for students who will embrace the opportunity to enrich their research and broaden their learning through their time here. In line with the Institute’s cross-disciplinary research community, we particularly welcome applications from graduates whose research spans multiple disciplines and applications. Students may propose original projects in line with any of the topics core to data science and the Alan Turing Institute’s strategic challenges.

Studentships include:

• A tax-free stipend of £20,500 per annum (up to 3.5-years), plus tuition fees and a travel allowance.
• Laptop and access to Institute resources for duration of the studentship.
• Opportunity to spend time in both a university research environment and at the Alan Turing Institute.
• Expert-led training in research disciplines central to data science.
• Access to a range of events, seminars, reading groups and workshops delivered by leaders in research, government and industry.
• Opportunities to collaborate on real world projects for societal impact with our current and emerging industry partners.

To be eligible students must meet the following criteria:

• Students may have home/EU or international status. (Please note a limited number of fully-funded overseas studentships are available.)
• Successful admission to one of our partner universities’ PhD programmes.
• Acceptable proof of legal right to study in the UK and satisfy the current requirements of UK Visa and Immigration.
• Students must satisfactorily pass the Institute’s security screening process which includes a Basic Disclosure and Barring Service check.
