The MRC-NIHR Trials Methodology Research Partnership (TMRP) aims to Improve health by improving trials. Our MRC Doctoral Training Partnership presents an opportunity to undertake training for a PhD in trials methodology.

The TMRP DTP PhD programme offers projects aligned various areas including statistics, data analytics and informatics, computer science, health economics, qualitative methods, mixed-methods, clinical medicine and psychology. This year we are offering up to 38 competition funded PhDs. To apply, you need to identify a research project that suits you to ensure a proper match between your research interests and your prospective supervisors. It is a requirement that you contact the supervisor of the project(s) you wish to apply for before submitting your application.

Funding

Studentships are fully funded for 3 years. The studentships cover: (i) an annual tax-free stipend at the standard Research Council rate (at least £18,622 for2023/24; to be confirmed for 2024/25), (ii) research costs, and (iii) tuition fees at the UK rate. Studentships can be extended on a case-by-case basis: for example, three months’ extra funding is guaranteed if students opt to take a three-month placement during their PhD.

Eligiblity

TMRP studentships are available to both UK and international applicants. Residency rules apply. A limited number of international fee bursaries may be awarded on a competitive basis. However, if selected International and EU fee rate candidates may need to cover the remaining amount of tuition fees by securing additional funding. Entry Requirements

Applicants are normally expected to be predicted or have achieved a first-class or strong upper second-class undergraduate degree (or equivalent international qualifications).
