Two funded PhD positions in English at Uppsala University

Uppsala University (Sweden) is a comprehensive research-intensive university with a strong international standing. Our ultimate goal is to conduct education and research of the highest quality and relevance to make a long-term difference in society. Our most important assets are all the individuals whose curiosity and dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has over 54,000 students, more than 7,500 employees and a turnover of around SEK 8 billion.

The Department of English contains five areas of specialization in both teaching and research: English Linguistics, English Literature, American Literature, Irish Language and Culture and SINAS, the Swedish Institute for North American Studies. Research at the department is conducted within all these areas. The doctoral program in English is divided into three sections, one specializing in English Linguistics, one specializing in English Literature, and one specializing in American Literature. We are now recruiting two PhD students in English: one with a specialization in English Linguistics and one with a specialization in American Literature.

Our doctoral students in the Department of English are integrated into our research environment. Further, doctoral students are also expected to join national and international networks by, for instance, attending conferences where they present their research. Abstracts of recently completed doctoral theses are available online. We are looking for two dynamic and committed scholars who work well independently and who are willing to cooperate in and to contribute to the community of researchers working in the department.

Research in English Linguistics includes both historical and present-day stages of the English language. Some recent and current research areas include corpus linguistics, Early and Late Modern English syntax and pragmatics, stylistics, heritage languages, and English as a second language. For the position with a specialization in English Linguistics, we particularly encourage research proposals on stylistics or corpus linguistics, two areas that may also be fruitfully combined in the same proposal.
