UKRI AI Centre for Doctoral Training In Practice-Oriented Artificial Intelligence

Practice-oriented AI is all about tackling complex problems in science and research and developing powerful pipelines employing state-of-the-art AI algorithms and techniques. The PrO-AI CDT will provide you with the transferable skills and deep AI expertise to solve societally important problems in a variety of domains in responsible ways.

Programme at a glance

Our bespoke training programme provides the opportunity to learn from leading academic experts and industry partners as a member of an interdisciplinary cohort of research students.

The Foundation Year involves:

  • Practice Projects offer ‘deep dives’ into a research domain provided by one of the CDT partners. Working in groups across cohorts, you will gain practical experience with designing, implementing and evaluating state-of-the-art AI pipelines.
  • Foundations of Practice-Oriented AIcovers the main topics in contemporary AI; human-centred and participatory methodologies; and the relevant legal and ethical context.
  • The Summer project is the entry point into a larger research area and the first deliverable of the PhD project. You will be matched with supervisors and partners throughout the first year of training and develop your project proposal with your personal supervisory team.

After the Foundation Year you will continue with your practice-oriented PhD research and build an online portfolio of transferable skills training.

Why study with us?

  • Bristol has been named “one of the UK’s hottest AI hubs”, hosting the Isambard-AI supercomputer as well as a range of other AI research and projects. It is a vibrant, friendly place to live and study.
  • The PrO-AI training programme is designed for people who want to become AI generalists, with broad knowledge of the available tools and when and how to use them.
  • You are a problem solver with an interest in AI applications, but you don’t necessarily want to restrict yourself to a single application area.
  • You will have access to our extensive network of UK and international academic and industry partners, many of whom offer research visits and internships.

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold/achieve a minimum of an upper-second class honours degree (or international equivalent) in a relevant discipline. The CDT is primarily aimed at students with a first degree in engineering or science and with strong programming skills but will also consider applicants with suitable skills acquired in employment.

Applicants need to have prior knowledge and experience with selected contemporary AI techniques and demonstrate this in their application.

Funding

We offer up to 10 fully funded places (EPSRC standard stipend rate + enhancement of £3385 per year, tuition fees and training allowance) supported by UKRI, the University of Bristol and partners. This scheme is open to both the UK and international applicants. We are only able to offer a limited number of studentships to applicants outside the UK. We are committed to improving access to candidates from groups that are currently under-represented.
