ULMS PhD Funding Call: January 2022 entry

Reference: PHD-GTF-ULMS-2022
Closing date: 12:00pm, midday, UK time, Friday 19th November 2021

The University of Liverpool Management School

The University of Liverpool Management School is inviting applications from prospective PhD candidates with an outstanding academic achievement and research potential for the prestigious Huw Jenkins Studentship as part of the GTF scheme to start in the 2021/22 academic year.

Social Entrepreneurship – specific funded project within the SIBE Subject Group

The successful Huw Jenkins Studentship candidate will work on a project similar to the one described below with their supervisors from the Management School. Candidates should submit a 2000-word research proposal (as part of the application) detailing how their research offers original and significant contribution to knowledge in the area described below.

Social entrepreneurship, as a form of entrepreneurial activity, has grown exponentially in recent years. This has led to significant public investment in the development of support mechanisms and an entrepreneurial culture that allows this type of entrepreneurship to thrive. This includes social impacts bonds, impact investment, slow investment, community shares and a growing range of alternative forms of social investment. Despite their contribution to the expansion of social entrepreneurship and the efficiency of public service delivery, many questions remain unanswered. Potential projects may explore the different array of investment/resourcing methods that social entrepreneurs’ access from an entrepreneurial finance/resource perspective. They may also explore the balance between social and economic dimensions of entrepreneurial impact.

Graduate Teaching Fellowships (GTFs)

The Graduate Teaching Fellowships provide an opportunity for applicants with a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree, a Masters degree in a cognate subject and a strong commitment to research, to combine studying for a PhD with the acquisition of teaching experience. Each studentship is associated to a particular subject group within the School, of which there are currently six. Participating in the Scheme will enable GTFs to attain funding for their doctoral research whilst receiving training and mentoring to become rounded academics. Successful candidates will be required to complete 300 hours of teaching during their programme, alongside the doctoral research project. GTFs will receive an annual stipend of £15,609 plus a fee waiver and will have access to student support funds in line with the wider doctoral training provision at ULMS. These fellowships will be open to all nationalities and subject areas. Home students receive a full School studentship (fees and maintenance grant). Overseas students will receive fees at Home rate (a possible top up payment may be available for International candidates, subject to availability); the maintenance grant for Overseas and Home students is the same amount.
