Course Structure
Integrated 1+3 year programme MSc + PhD or Direct start PhD with integrated training
- 1 + 3 MSc + PhD format (with PhD project choice during the MSc),
or
- integrated training offered during a 4 year PhD with certificate, with selection of a specific advertised project
These routes both offer:
- Multidisciplinary projects and modules - spanning experiment and quantitation
- Strong industrial links
- Significant emphasis on transferable skills team building, communication of science, decision making, leadership, ethics, research proposals, careers

About the course
Training will be delivered from across physical sciences, engineering and manufacturing, statistics, life and medical sciences in close partnership with industry, with research areas including pharmaceuticals, agro-chemicals and additives, soft matter, biological systems, energy and functional materials. Each MSc or PhD research project will be aimed at the creation of new instrumentation and techniques or improvements to existing methods to solve real-world problems that cannot be tackled now.
MSc year: Rigorous MSc programme comprising of taught modules in frontier analytical techniques including electrochemistry and sensors, magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, microscopy & imaging, separation science, X-ray and neutron that link to underpinning modules in, e.g., chemistry and statistics, together with individual-based research projects.
