About the Programme

The Department of Informatics at King’s College London conducts internationally-leading research in a broad spectrum of Computer Science areas, including Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Software Systems, Human-Computer Interaction, Foundations of Computer Science and multidisciplinary research involving engineering, mathematics, social sciences, medical sciences and business studies. See the Research section in the departmental web site for the full scope of the research.

The department invites applications for 25 studentships to start 1 October 2022. The studentships are funded for 3.5 years and include tuition fees, a stipend at the UK Research Council rate plus London weighting, and allowance for research consumables and travel.

Eligibility

Applicants should have a first-class undergraduate degree or a distinction at MSc level in Computer Science or another discipline relevant for their PhD project proposal (for example, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics or Physics). In exceptional cases other qualifications and experience may be considered and all applications will be assessed on their merit as appropriate to the individual case.

The eligibility criteria of most of the available studentships include the requirement that an applicant must be classed as a home student. Up to 10% of studentships are available to outstanding international candidates.

How to apply

Applicants should start by identifying potential supervisors and contacting them with a summary of applicant’s academic background, research interests and general ideas for their PhD research. Information about potential supervisors and their contact details can be found in the departmental web site. If the potential supervisor suggests proceeding with formal application, then two separate applications should be made: an application for entry to the PhD programme via the university online admissions system (following the guidelines available here) and an application for a studentship in a form of a "Studentship Application Statement" sent to the Department PGR Administrators at pgr-informatics@kcl.ac.uk.

Further guidelines for the application process, including guidelines for preparing Studentship Application Statements are available here.

Queries related to these studentships should be sent to pgr-informatics@kcl.ac.uk.

Application deadline for the first round: 15 January 2022
