GTA PhD Studentships open to UK and International applicants (closes 30 September)
The School of Criminology is offering a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) PhD Studentship starting in January 2023 and are available to students not currently studying for a PhD.
The Graduate Teaching Assistantship is available for full-time registration and payable as a full UK tuition fee waiver for four years subject to annual progress review. The successful applicant will also receive a combined annual stipend and salary package totalling £16,062
About Graduate Teaching Assistantships
This is a Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA), which means that you will be required to do some teaching as part of your training and will facilitate student participation in their learning through tutorials, seminars and workshops geared towards effective development of knowledge and the application of principles set out in lectures and module materials. GTAs allow research students to fund their PhD through part-time teaching work with the University.
A Graduate Teaching Assistant is responsible to the Head of School and is expected to undertake teaching or other duties within the School - not normally exceeding 8-10 contact hours per week - while undertaking research leading to a PhD. Training is provided to help Graduate Teaching Assistants develop their teaching related skills and enhance their professional competencies. Job Summary

GTA FUNDING
4-year Graduate Teaching Assistant Studentship provides:
Tuition fees at the UK fee rates for 4 years
Annual combined stipend and salary package totalling £16,062 per year for 4 years
International applicants are welcome to apply but must be able to demonstrate they can fund the difference between UK and International fees for the duration of their study. We are not able to offer full overseas fee waivers.
Difference in fees to be paid by International applicants is £11,004 per year of study.

PRACTICE-BASED PhD - Tuition Fee waivers available for UK applicants only (closes 11 November)
The School of Criminology at the University of Leicester is inviting applications from UK candidates who would like to study a practice-based PhD.
What is a practice-based PhD?
A practice-based PhD offers you the opportunity to obtain a PhD, but it differs from the types of PhDs that have often been completed in universities. Typically, a practice-based PhD comprises 3 components:
a research-focused component (which often consists of empirical research, a literature review, methodological review, and an implications for practice paper);
a practice-focused component (where a practice-focused initiative is developed and implemented, e.g. a training programme for staff in a criminal justice organisation);
a reflective and evaluative component (where the practice-focused initiative is described, evaluated and discussed in relation to relevant academic and practice-focused literature).
What are we looking for?
We are looking for candidates:
with a good academic background (minimum 2:1 undergraduate degree in a relevant field, with a Masters’ qualification or equivalent practical experience as desirable);
who have an idea or topic that has clear practical value to a criminal justice (or related) setting/agency/organisation and is suitable for studying via research;
who have the explicit agreement of a criminal justice (or related) agency/organisation to support their proposed project (evidence of this is required as part of the application process).
