Scholarship Focus

Since Vladimir Putin sanctioned the illegal invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Europe has hosted nearly 8 million Ukrainian refugees. 155,500 have sought refuge in the UK. Canterbury Christ Church University has taken an active role in supporting the local Ukrainian refugee community with free English language classes; employing Ukrainian English language teachers; and supporting Ukrainians to study on undergraduate and postgraduate courses. In addition to this, the University has gained two Ukrainian Researcher at Risk Fellowship; one of whom is an applied linguist researching the Ukrainian refugee community.

Ukrainian refugees, like many refugees, face a range of challenges living in a foreign country whilst their own country is at war. From an applied linguistics perspective, these challenges include issues of language, communication and cultural identity. With our Researcher at Risk fellow, several staff in our Centre are now researching these issues. We are looking for a PhD candidate who can join our team with a proposal that examines an aspect or aspects of these challenges broadly within the qualitative research paradigm. The proposal should be in the areas of TESOL, intercultural communication and/or critical discourse studies. What has to be central to the proposal is research that generates knowledge to understand and improve the lives of Ukrainian refugees and refugees as a whole.

If you have any questions about the proposal or would like an informal conversation, please contact Dr Christopher Anderson
