*For current first years - if successful the length of the scholarship will be adjusted accordingly, e.g. if one year of study is already complete then the length of the scholarship will be reduced to 3 years

Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Graduate Teaching Assistants Scheme (GTA)

The University of Leicester's College of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities is committed to enhancing BAME presence in its research postgraduate cohorts and supporting BAME students to progress into academia as a career and thereby to increase the number of BAME staff within the College.

The College will offer UK BAME scholarships within its multiple subject areas (Law; Criminology; Management; Economics; Education; Museum Studies; History; Politics and International Relations; Media Communications; Sociology; Modern Languages; History of Art and Film; English; and Archaeology and Ancient History)

Students are engaged as Graduate Teaching Assistants hold a unique position in the University; they will be both registered students in receipt of a scholarship and employees of the University. As such they hold two mutually dependent agreements with the University of Leicester and are required to abide by the terms and conditions of both agreements, as well as having the opportunity to enjoy the privileges of each scheme. Terms and conditions will be provided on appointment.

The GTA scholarships will be funded for 4 years after which there will be a competitive process for a Teaching Fellowship position for an initial fixed period of 1 year.

Grade 7 Teaching Fellowship: There will be a one year Grade 7 Teaching Fellowship position that the successful BAME GTA students can apply for in the 4th year of their study. Details of this competitive process will be communicated at the start of the 4th Year. Expected salary would be Grade 7, spine point 31.

UK Bachelor Degree at 2:1 honours or better applicants are should also hold or expect to hold a Master's Degree by the PhD start date of 28th September 2020 or overseas equivalent qualification.

Funding Notes

Successful applicants would receive:
a) The scholarship element of the GTA is a combined salary and maintenance grant equalling the full UK Research Council (UKRI) rate £15,285 (rate for the 2020/21) plus tuition fees at the UK rate.
b) Tailored support and career mentoring/networking opportunities throughout the PhD process
c) Preparatory career training and support for application to a post-PhD position
