This studentship is a collaboration between the Kent and Medway Medical School (KMMS) and the Centre for Health Service Studies (CHSS), both at the University of Kent. Funded by the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration Kent, Surrey, Sussex (ARC KSS), we are welcoming applications from a prospective doctoral student interested in exploring the intersection of culture and mental health, working around mental health beliefs, perceptions of and experiences with mental health care/access to mental health from the perspective of migrant and/or ethnic minority communities in the Kent area.
Criteria
The studentship opportunity is open to all candidates with the following requirements:
- Have completed a health- or social work/care-related postgraduate training course at Master's level equivalent to merit or distinction.
- A combination of qualifications and/or experience that is equivalent to a relevant UK Master’s level degree may also be accepted.
- This studentship is available for eligible UK home-rate fee candidates only.
Scholarship
Project proposals are welcome from students with a clear methodological approach, for instance ethnography (participant observation), qualitative, mixed-methods research and participatory or creative methods in any of the following areas:
- Examining the link between ethnicity and suicide in Kent
- Perceptions and understandings of mental health in Kent's Sikh community
- Perceptions and understanding of mental health in Kent's Greek Cypriot community
- Ethnicity, mental health and gender in breast cancer survivors
- Propose your own study on mental health involving community members a migrant/ethnic minority community in Kent

Centre for Health Services Studies (CHSS), a centre of research excellence within the Division of Law, Society and Social Justice at the University of Kent. CHSS undertakes high quality research into a wide range of health systems and health services issues at local, national and international levels.
KMMS, launched in September 2020, is home to a growing multidisciplinary research group, including psychiatrists, public health specialists, anthropologists and health service researchers. Researchers are currently leading programmes of research across the translational pathway, from pre-clinical and biomedical research to research in the community around health care service delivery.
