A new PhD in Creative Writing
Open to writers who have creative publications in the public domain. This is the fastest route to a PhD, usually taking less than 12 months to complete. It is based on outputs that you have already produced, such as a novel, a full length collection of short fiction, a full length collection of poetry or a full length script. Typically, candidates are literary writers who have a proven track record and are working in higher education or have aspirations to work in higher education.
Content
You will write a commentary of approximately 10,000 words that demonstrates how your published writing has contributed to new knowledge. Your writing should represent the equivalent of at least three years of full-time work. The work has to satisfy the University
that it makes a significant and coherent contribution to the field.
Career opportunities
Once you have gained your doctorate, you will be in a stronger position to progress your academic career. Increasingly, a doctorate is an essential requirement for recruitment and promotion in university teaching roles. A PhD also adds credibility in applications for research funding.
A PhD is “probably the most internationally transferable qualification” according to the Higher ducation Policy Institute. Therefore, converting your previous research outputs into a PhD makes perfect sense in terms of increasing your employability and opening up new opportunities.
Creative Writing at the University of Huddersfield
Our Creative Writing team compromises Michael Stewart, Simon Crump and Steve Ely, who are all published, award-winning writers specialising in novel writing, short fiction, poetry and scriptwriting.
We show our commitment to our students by providing opportunities for publication or for public readings, and for interaction with renowned poets and fiction writers. Our biennial competition for new writers, the anthology Grist, publishes new work alongside pieces by established writers such as Simon Armitage, Ian Mcmillan, Lemn Sissay, Helen Simpson, Melvin Burgess, Alexei Sayle, and is given away free to libraries, HE institutions and literary agents. The annual Huddersfield Literature Festival, established in 2006, provides innovative and high-profile events which showcase new and emerging writers and brings big-name authors to Huddersfield for readings, workshops and masterclasses.
