The Defence Studies Department of King's College London offers Defence Academy PhD Studentships on a three-year term. These are based in Shrivenham, Wiltshire, where King's has responsibility for academic support at the Joint Services Command and Staff College (JSCSC).
The Department has a thriving research culture in subjects across the range of military and naval history, defence policy and international security studies, reflected in the publication of high-quality monographs and articles in peer-reviewed journals. Members of DSD work closely with a range of British and international governmental and academic organisations, providing policy advice and consultancy.
For some years, DSD staff have supervised postgraduate research students in the Department of War Studies, our sister department, but DSD has now launched its own PhD programme. It already has approximately 50 postgraduate research students taking advantage of the Department's unique combination of research expertise and close interaction with the Armed Forces and the Ministry of Defence. We are keen to receive applications for postgraduate research from students whose research interests complement those of members of staff and of our research groups.
The Defence Academy PhD Studentships include payment of annual registration fees equivalent to UK/EU fee level and are offered with a tax-free stipend of £11,500 per annum plus paid teaching opportunities with a salary of at least £4,000 per annum.
The Studentships are awarded to prospective students with excellent research proposals in any field of Defence and Security Studies. Successful applicants will be expected to assist with teaching duties at the JSCSC. The awards are for one year in the first instance, renewable for further study provided that students satisfy the yearly course requirements. Each Studentship is offered for a maximum of three academic years.
The awards are made by a joint panel of research staff in the Defence Studies Department. Candidates will be shortlisted for interview based on achievement and potential as demonstrated in each applicant's supporting documentation (see below).
Applicants must have submitted an application to the Defence Studies PhD programme to commence study between 1st August 2015 and 31st January 2016. Studentship holders must register as full-time students, although part-time offer holders may apply on the understanding that their registration would need to change to full-time if their application is successful.
