Our Department of Arts offers a rich research environment by cultivating dialogues between critical/historical/theoretical/empirical and practice-based research, and maintaining strong relationships with many national, local and regional organisations including BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, British Film Institute, Live Theatre, The National Trust, New Writing North, Tate and the V&A. We invite ambitious, cutting-edge proposals located within one or more of our research teams in Fine Art, Visual and Material Culture, Film and Media, and Theatre and Performance. 

PhD proposals that lead to an 80,000-word thesis or practice research portfolio with complementary thesis (c. 40,000 words) are welcome. We invite PhD proposals for research that enriches understanding of issues within the arts, culture and society. We provide expert supervision by internationally leading researchers, who run these interdisciplinary research groups:

Eligibility and How to Apply:

Eligibility Requirements: 

  • Academic excellence i.e. 2:1 (or equivalent GPA from non-UK universities with preference for 1st class honours); or a Masters (preference for Merit or above); or APEL evidence of substantial practitioner achievement. 
  • Appropriate IELTS score, if required. 
  • Applicants cannot apply if they are already a PhD holder or if currently engaged in Doctoral study at Northumbria or elsewhere. 

To be classed as a Home student, candidates must: 

  • Be a UK National (meeting residency requirements), or 
  • have settled status, or 
  • have pre-settled status (meeting residency requirements), or 
  • have indefinite leave to remain or enter. 

If a candidate does not meet the criteria above, they would be classed as an International student.   

Applicants will need to be in the UK and fully enrolled before stipend payments can commence and be aware of these additional costs that may be incurred, as these are not covered by the studentship.

Funding Notes

Funding Information Competition Funded Project (Students Worldwide) Home and International students (inc. EU) are welcome to apply. The studentship is available to Home and International (including EU) students and includes a full stipend at UKRI rates (for 2023/24 full-time study this is £18,622 per year) and full tuition fees. Studentships are also available for applicants who wish to study on a part-time basis over 5 years (0.6 FTE, stipend £11,173 per year and full tuition fees) in combination with work or personal responsibilities.
