About the Programme

The Department of Educational Research at Lancaster University is currently 6th in the UK for education, THE world subject rankings 2022. We have over 50 years of teaching educational research and currently have over 400 postgraduate students enrolled on our programmes from all around the world.

The Department is organised into three Research Centres:

·        Centre for Higher Education Research and Evaluation

·        Centre for Social Justice and Wellbeing in Education

·        Centre for Technology Enhanced Learning

The Centre for Higher Education Research and Evaluation

As one of the oldest centres in the world conducting higher education research, we are committed to enhancing and transforming the higher education sector and its role in society, economy and culture.

We have collaborations, partnerships and projects with world renowned higher education research centres in the UK, Europe and beyond. We are a key partner in the Centre for Global Higher Education (CGHE).

Visit the Higher Education Researcher podcast which features short interviews with current and past doctoral students, staff, and guest scholars to talk about their current interests, research, and thinking.

The current co-directors are Janja Komljenovic and Natasa Lackovic.

The Centre for Social Justice and Wellbeing in Education

The Centre for Social Justice and Wellbeing in Education is a vibrant network of active researchers engaged in exploring questions about equity, diversity, inclusion and wellbeing in education. Our research spans a wide range of formal and informal education environments including schools, higher education, home and the workplace.

We work with education practitioners, activists, advocacy and lobby groups and NGOs, learners and students, families, radical educators, and policy makers.

Our research coheres around a radical ethic of kindness. It aims at positive change and focuses on learning within a broad range of contexts.

  • Our publications list provides details of books and journal articles written by members of the Centre;

The current director is Melis Cin.

The Centre for Technology Enhanced Learning

The Centre for Technology Enhanced Learning focuses on theoretical and practical challenges related to educational uses of technologies for teaching and learning in formal and informal educational settings.

The Centre is a hub for research and practice in technology enhanced learning. Underpinned by a small core team mostly based in the Department of Educational Research, the Centre has Associate Members drawn from a range of other departments across Lancaster University and from other groups worldwide with whom we maintain close links. We encourage the participation of a range of PhD students currently conducting their thesis research, and we benefit from the ongoing contributions of Alumni Members who previously obtained their doctorates in the Department.

The current co-Directors of the Centre are Brett Bligh and Kyungmee Lee.

The current Doctoral Researchers representative is Jane Nodder and the current Alumni Members representative is Philip Moffitt.

Traditional route PhD - independent study

With a long history of research and research supervision and a very large number of PhDs awarded as well as a thriving and friendly research community, students enrolled via the Educational Research (Independent Study) route are able to participate in research seminars, postgraduate group meetings and in the research and evaluation projects led by our academics, when available. We consistently achieve very high ratings from our postgraduate students on the level of satisfaction with the quality of supervision they receive. Our postgraduate research students feel part of the life of the Department as well as a contributing member of a community of researchers.

Online and Distance learning

The Educational Research Department has considerable experience of supporting online and distance learners and we aim to make all our students feel that they are full members of the Department and part of the postgraduate community. Wherever possible we facilitate online participation at events and seminars organised by the Department.
