About the Programme

The Creative Technologies Research Centre (CTRC) welcomes applications for a full-time PhD scholarship (£16,062, fee waver, plus an annual research expense allowance of £500). 

CTRC is based within the School of Arts and Creative Industries at London South Bank University. Within the Centre, our research groups focus on screen, games, and sonic practices, bringing together research and enterprise to achieve world-leading research and innovative work in a collaborative atmosphere. We offer access to excellent film, music and games studio facilities, including research labs in Volumetic Capture and Virtual Production at our Elephant Studios centrally positioned near London’s Southbank, and Virtual Production and Green Screen at Maidstone Studios in Kent. 

We welcome bright and creative postgraduate researchers who wish to investigate in an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary manner any of the following areas:

- Film making and screen studies

- Sound production and music studies

- Game studies and development

- Virtual media production 

We have relationships with world-leading companies specialising in advanced technologies for the moving image such as Mo-Sys Engineering, OnSetFacilities, Target3D, Final Pixel. We also have research collaborations with arts and creative organisations in London and across the South East of England such as the BFI, UK Music, The Rose Theatre, Victoria and Albert Museum, and with cultural networks such as South East Creative Economy Network CreativeEstuary, and the Thames Estuary Production Corridor, while our 6.1m European Regional Development Funded Hi3 Network is developing a network of researchers and small to medium-sized businesses across London, Essex, Kent, and East Sussex to undertake research in creative technologies with partners Canterbury Christ Church University, Screen South, Maidstone Studios, and Creative Folkestone

Funding Notes

This PhD scholarship is open to UK residents who qualify for domestic fee. Applicants are expected to have a good honours degree (2.1 and above). You will be required to show proof of all your qualifications, and you will be asked to supply two academic references as part of admission process. If English is not your first language you will be required to prove your competency in English, showing an IELTS scores of at least 7.0 at postgraduate level.
