Nottingham Business School (NBS) is leading a European consortium, which has recently secured a substantial amount of funding to help recruit 15 full time PhD students. As part of the Horizon2020, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, Innovative Training Networks the Smart-BEEjS Human-Centric Energy Districts: Smart Value Generation by Building Efficiency and Energy Justice for Sustainable Living project has been awarded. The project allows all researchers to participate in an exciting programme comprising international schools, workshops, and secondments at academic as non-academic partners, commencing 2019/2020. By the end of the programme, you will have the skills required to be transformative and influential champions and leaders of tomorrow, promoting Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) and Energy Justice for all citizens.
Smart-BEEjS is a consortium of 8 universities and research centres, supported by 16 non-academic entities, in the United Kingdom, Italy, Portugal, Austria, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain and Switzerland. Each of the 15 PhD researchers will be working towards a unique PhD degree, supported by a carefully chosen supervisory team that maximises both scientific excellence as well as interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral collaboration. Each appointment will be based in one of the 8 universities and research centres and allow mobility, research and training experience across the consortium (see details on the eligibility document attached).
The project will train the 15 students using an innovative doctoral training programme that incorporates deep training in their individual subjects, with the ability to understand and engage with the needs of citizens and communities, the needs and opportunities available from scientists in different disciplines. In addition, they will have the opportunity to work through a collaborative research programme with those who produce the technologies necessary for PEDs, and work with the policymakers who can facilitate these new and exciting opportunities to generate new knowledge, influence and promote the development of PEDs.
PEDs can generate local decentralised and innovative energy ecosystems, placing the consumer at its centre. The EU has used the Strategic Energy Technology Plan to transfer power to consumers, by decentralising the energy ecosystem to the local district-level. One of the targets of the plan is to establish “100 positive energy districts by 2025 (baseline 2015) and 80% of electricity consumption to be managed by consumers in 4 out of 5 households”.

Successful applicants will be appointed to the base of the salary rates that are defined by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, Innovative Training Networks.
This role does not meet the minimum requirements set by Schengen or UK Visas & Immigration to enable sponsorship of migrant workers. Therefore, we cannot progress applications from candidates who require sponsorship to work in the Schengen Area or UK.
Some or all of the PhD opportunities in this programme have funding attached. It is available to citizens of a number of European countries (including the UK). In most cases this will include all EU nationals. However full funding may not be available to all applicants and you should read the full programme details for further information.
