About the Programme

UEA's Faculty of Arts and Humanities invites applications for doctoral studentships for entry in October 2021.

Areas of study include:

  • American Studies
  • Art History
  • Film, Television and Media Studies
  • History
  • Language, Communication and Translation Studies
  • Literature, Drama and Creative Writing
  • Museum and Heritage Studies
  • Philosophy
  • Political, Social and International Studies


Studentship funding for these subjects is available from two sources: 

  1. The CHASE Doctoral Training Partnership
  2. Faculty of Arts and Humanities

Studentship funding includes the payment of tuition fees and a stipend (currently £15,285 per year). Funds to assist with research costs, training and other development activities (e.g. placements) can also be requested. The funding does not cover visa costs or other relocation expenses.


Applicants wishing to be considered for CHASE or UEA studentship funding must submit their PhD application to UEA by midday on 11 January 2021, and a studentship funding application to CHASE by midday on 18 January 2021. However, early applications are encouraged.


South East Network for Social Sciences (SeNSS) ESRC studentships

The Faculty also invites applications for for SeNSS ESRC studentship funding in the following areas of study:

  • Linguistics
  • Politics and International Relations
  • Social Anthropology

SeNSS funds integrated 1+3 (Master's & PhD) studentships, and ‘stand-alone' doctorates

Applicants wishing to be considered for SeNSS studentship funding must submit their PhD application to UEA by 18 January 2021, and their studentship funding application to SeNSS by 1 February 2021.

A number of funded and self-funded PhD projects are also offered throughout the academic year, and advertised on the UEA website.

Funding Notes

Studentship funding is available to all applicants, but please note that CHASE and SeNSS funding for international students is capped at 30% of the total studentships awarded.
