Faculty of Arts & Humanities PhD Studentships at UEA

  Faculty of Arts and Humanities

About the Programme

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities has a tradition of producing internationally excellent, creative, and innovative research both within and across disciplines. Our research is at the forefront of contemporary scholarly debates, and it reaches beyond the academy into the world at large. Our Postgraduate Researchers (PGRs) are central to that work.

UEA's Faculty of Arts and Humanities invites applications for doctoral studentships every autumn.

Areas of study include:

  • American Studies
  • Art History
  • Film, Television and Media Studies
  • History
  • Language, Communication and Translation Studies
  • Literature, Drama and Creative Writing
  • Museum and Heritage Studies
  • Philosophy
  • Political, Social and International Studies

There are three main sources of studentship funding for postgraduate researchers in the arts and humanities at UEA.

CHASE AHRC Studentships

First, as members of the CHASE consortium, our students are eligible to apply for CHASE AHRC studentships, of which over 50 will be awarded each year across the consortium.

SeNSS Funding

Second, postgraduates proposing research in the ESRC remit can apply for SeNSS funding via one of three pathways: Politics and International Relations; Linguistics; and Social Anthropology. Over 40 SeNSS studentships are awarded each year for PhD-only studentships and ‘1+3’ studentships that include a Master’s course. Further details can be found on our SeNSS web pages.

Faculty of Arts and Humanities Studentships

Third, the Faculty of Arts and Humanities offers eight studentships annually through its Schools of Study. In order to be considered, prospective PhD students will need to submit a CHASE or SeNSS application, with the support of their supervisor. Applicants to these schemes will automatically also be considered for Faculty studentship awards.

Both home and international students are eligible to apply for these studentships, which cover tuition fees and provide a stipend to cover living expenses, set at the UKRI rate. Funds can also be requested to assist with research and training costs.

All three competitions open in October with application deadlines in December and January. Applicants need to secure the support of a supervisor in advance of any application for studentship funding, so are strongly encouraged to make contact with potential supervisors as early as possible in the process, and very much in advance of any deadline.

The University of East Anglia is deeply committed to widening participation, and applications are welcomed from groups who are under-represented in the research community, including those from ethnic minorities, lower-income backgrounds, and people with disabilities.

Applications

For all studentships, two applications will be required: (1) the application to UEA for a place to study for a PhD; and (2) the application for CHASE or SeNSS studentship funding. The application deadlines for entry in October 2023 are:

Applications for a place to study for a PhD: 15 December 2022

Applications for SeNSS ESRC studentship funding: Midday on 20 January 2023

Applications for CHASE AHRC studentship funding: Midday on 27 January 2023

Further funding opportunities and applications

A number of funded and self-funded PhD projects are also offered throughout the academic year, and advertised on the UEA website.

We welcome applications from students with their own funding all year - please enquire for further information.
