You want to probe the most prominent critical theories in film and media – you know your research has the potential to challenge and surprise the academic world.
If you study a PhD in Film Studies and Media Studies at ARU, you'll be based in Cambridge. This means you'll have the opportunity to get involved in Cambridge's thriving arts and film scene, including the Cambridge Film Festival, Watersprite, Take One and Cambridge Arts Picture House. You'll also benefit from our innovative research unit ARCMedia, which aims to address the formative structures of power, affect and attention that are taking shape through the contemporary mediascape – and to assess the creative potentialities of digital technologies and practices as they continue to evolve in the modern world.
How we'll support you
You know you've got what it takes to conduct ground breaking research. We can give you the academic guidance to do this. If you study a PhD or MPhil with us, you'll work with two supervisors whose experience is most relevant to your particular field of study, with the option of additional help from other staff members if you need.
This way, you can develop your research within a strong network of support, expertise and experience. Our supervisory staff are internationally recognised in their field, having written and contributed to a number of influential academic books and publications. Many have been involved with prestigious research projects both in the UK and around the world – which is why our department was named world-leading for our research, according to the Research Excellence Framework 2014.
Share your research
You want your research to excite and inspire the next generation of students. At ARU, you may have the chance to take on teaching responsibilities for undergraduate students and organise research events at the university. This way, you can develop your work through face-to-face debate and critical analysis from both your peers and some of our younger students.
We also host regular faculty and departmental seminars, so you'll have the opportunity to share your ideas within a safe and supportive setting.
You're ready to be part of an ambitious academic community. StoryLab is an interdisciplinary research institute that interrogates and generates multimodal stories. These include film, data visualisation, sound, photography, digital media, and traditional forms of storytelling, like literature, illustration and painting.
Through these mediums we explore themes of identity, truth, environment, migration and wellbeing through different research projects – and ultimately aim to investigate and understand the remedial power of storytelling in a society afflicted with division and inequality.
