About the Programme
Fully-funded four-year PhD programmes
The European University Institute (EUI) offers well-structured doctoral programmes allowing you to develop your intellectual curiosity and enabling original research. Approximately 150 scholarships are available every year, covering tuition fees and providing a monthly grant.
An EUI PhD is more than writing a dissertation
Our culturally diverse academic community allows you to study alongside approximately 900 scholars hailing from 80 countries.
Our inclusive, dynamic, multi-lingual environment means you work predominantly in English, while the use of other languages is encouraged and supported.
Our call for applications opens in November, for admission the following September. The deadline to apply online is 31 January.
About the EUI Department of History
The EUI Department of History examines Europe's relationship to the world.
- Think beyond boundaries – study global connections within early modern and modern European history.
- Explore transnational and comparative European history – access the Historical Archives of the European Union and be supported in visiting other archives.
- Benefit from close thesis supervision – our professors and researchers create a constructive working environment, developing projects together through close consultatin.

The close supervision that we provide for your PhD gives you the support for your research, as well as the confidence, to work independently. This intellectual freedom allows you to shape your research, and your career, with the guidance and backing of our research-excellent staff.
Our Department encourages a culture of conversation – researchers and faculty work together to develop ideas and, each year, world leaders in numerous fields visit to discuss and present their research. This interaction enables you to build your understanding, as you learn how to further develop and discuss your work through such remarkable access to these experts.
Establish international links
EUI alumni form an international professional network. Our alumni hold positions in academia (65%), international organisations (9%), other research institutions (6%), the private sector (6%), law firms (3%), national organisations (3%), national central banks (3%), European Central Bank (1%)*.
