 Funded PhD Programme (Students Worldwide)

About the Programme

The School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering aims to be the world's leading integrated centre for built environment research, education, and learning, and is committed to investing in the next generation of exceptional researchers. In the most recent UK Research Excellence Framework, the School was ranked first for our research environment, with 95% of our research rated “world-leading” or “internationally excellent” for its influence on society, the economy, and policy.

The School's studentship competition offers the chance for UK and International applicants interested in undertaking a PhD to have their full-time studies paid for, including a generous stipend. Studentships are for three years and provide a tax-free stipend of £18,622 per annum (2023/24 rate) for the duration of the studentship plus university tuition fees.

The School boasts world-class facilities, with a dedicated Research Hub for all researchers to work in, a 3,000m2 research laboratory, and one of the fastest High-Performance Computing clusters in the UK. A key part of our ethos is our extensive links with world-leading universities, industry, governments, and NGOs, making our graduates highly sought after in academia, industry, and commerce worldwide.

The School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering is dedicated to supporting an equitable, diverse, and inclusive research environment – to create a better world, together. The diverse backgrounds, characteristics and opinions within our research community are our great strength and are key to our pursuit of research and educational excellence. In the past ten years, we have averaged a successful PhD completion every two weeks, with doctoral graduates coming from 48 different countries.

We welcome applicants for the following projects in our priority research area of Resilient Infrastructure, where our multi-disciplinary approach is focused on five key areas: safe and intelligent mobility, transport policy, structural and geotechnical infrastructure, flood risk and management, and water, sanitation, and waste management:

  • Progressive collapse analysis of steel structures
  • Performance-based optimization of novel lightweight steel frame systems for resilient modular constructions
  • Climate change-resilient geotechnical infrastructure
  • Assessment of moisture-induced damage effects in timber buildings
  • Impact of recycling and coating on nanoplastic emission from textile products

Studentships will be awarded on a competitive basis to applicants who have applied to advertised projects starting with the reference ‘ABCE24'.
