About the Programme

Change lives and shape futures with a PhD in Planning and Environmental Management.

Our research concerns the development of the communities and places in which we live and work.

We aspire to help create better cities by critically analysing and helping shape better policies for promoting more equitable and sustainable cities for future generations.

As a doctoral candidate, you'll join a friendly and supportive research community, opportunities to interact with other students and staff, and the encouragement to make a real impact with your research.

Our research groups

Our research focuses primarily around the making of future cities – embracing issues such as spatial analysis, urban governance and sustainability.

Planning and Environmental Management provides a vibrant and nurturing research environment for those who are interested in pursuing research in:

  • Urban and regional planning
  • Future cities and data analysis
  • Environmental planning and management
  • Environmental impact assessment
  • Green infrastructure, urban design and regeneration
  • Housing and property development

We have three research themes:

  • Spatial Policy and Analysis Laboratory
  • Sustainable Urbanism and Environmental Resilience
  • Urban Governance, Policies and Planning

Funding your research

 We offer a number of funding opportunities for talented individuals to undertake doctoral training with us, including School studentships and the President's Doctoral Scholar Award. All successful applicants who apply for their programme before 10 February 2020 are automatically considered for this funding.

If you're from the UK or EU you can also apply for funding with the ESRC, and will need to have applied for a programme by 27 January 2020 in order to meet the funding deadline of 3 February 2020, 5pm GMT. Please check the studentship page for further details.
