Prospective students should have a strong background in one or more of the following: Area Studies, Cultural Studies, Development Studies, Environmental Studies, International Studies, Urban Studies.

Overview
Geography at the OU, is at the forefront of interdisciplinary research on key themes of space and power, culture and practice, and environment and politics. The discipline's breadth of impactful research is enabled by its distinctive group of internationally renowned and award winning academics whose work has shaped key debates in the discipline through explorations of notions of space and place. The Open Space Research Centre supports the group's interdisciplinary research agenda. Geography at the OU is highly research active. Currently, its researchers are leading several ESRC, AHRC and Newton grant funded projects.
The Geography pathway at the Open University provides distinctive PhD-level training to address societal and environmental problems. We supervise PhD students in the same way as at other universities - on a face to face basis.
Geography at the OU has a diverse and lively postgraduate student community that forms an important part of our research culture. Students are regarded as valued members of the department, able to interact with research-active academic staff and post-doctoral fellows based on campus in Milton Keynes, as well as with other staff and students in the Faculty of Arts and Social Science and its associated research centres.
