The Department carries out research and teaching in health, medicine, exercise and sport, making significant contributions to national and international health agendas. 

Healthcare 

The Department's expertise in Healthcare focuses on innovation in the design, delivery, organisation, and evaluation of healthcare interventions. We have a particular emphasis on disabling and distressing, long term or life-limiting conditions, such as chronic pain, stroke, dementia, rheumatic disease, and severe mental health problems. The Department has significant research expertise and experience in a range of topics including: 

• addictions and addictive behaviour

• child and adolescent cognitive behavioural therapy 
• complex Regional Pain Syndromes

Population Health 

The Department for Health organises its work related to population health improvement in three main ways.

Much the largest element in the population health portfolio is related to: 

• Sport, health and exercise science: research which encompasses both the health and performance dimensions of exercise, individual projects range from cellular/molecular biology, study of the effects of exercise on whole body systems and physical activity in health and disease. Two main themes of research exist: Active Lifespan and Integrative Human Performance. 

The Department also attaches growing importance to:

• Tobacco control: evaluation of tobacco control policy, developing the evidence base for future policy, understanding and containing the influence of the tobacco industry on policy, evaluation of smoking cessation interventions, studies of smoking in pregnancy, studies of smoking and mental health, systematic reviews of prevention and cessation interventions 
• Health inequalities: committed to analysing and disseminating knowledge about how best to reduce health inequalities both in the UK and internationally.
