About the Programme

The School of Health and Social Care at London South Bank University is offering a stipend of £15,000 per year plus a fee waiver for a full-time PhD studentship (3 years) in one of the following areas (UK applicants only). Please send a covering letter (one side of A4 max) explaining why you are suitable for the studentship along with a brief explanation of a possible research question/topic, and a CV (4 sides of A4 maximum) to Professor Nicola Thomas Nicola.thomas@lsbu.ac.uk by Friday 21 June at 17:00. HEALTH PROMOTION

Proposed Director of Studies: Dr Susie Sykes - sykess@lsbu.ac.uk

Health literacy as the motivation, knowledge and competencies to access, understand, appraise and apply health information is a critical resource for health and wellbeing.

Possible Research Topics
We are interested in proposals on a range of health literacy related topics including:
• Health literacy and its application to specific contexts and topics.
• Critical health literacy and interventions to develop
• ehealth literacy
• Community and Distributive health literacy.

Possible Methodology/Methods
• We particularly welcome proposals based on qualitative or mixed methods methodologies.

Applicant Experience Required
Applicants for a Research Degree programme at LSBU are usually expected to have a good honours degree (2:1 and above) and a relevant postgraduate qualification in a relevant subject, preferably a merit at Master's level.



WOMEN'S HEALTH

Proposed Director of Studies: Dr Sarah Church - churchs@lsbu.ac.uk

Our research interests focus on enhancing women's health through relevant and impactful research that contributes to reducing inequalities and leads to improvement in outcomes, care and experience for women.

Possible Research Topics
Women's experiences of healthcare related to aspects of maternity and reproductive services:
• Pregnancy and childbirth
• Motherhood
• Sexual and reproductive health
• Cancer, pregnancy and motherhood
• Use of assisted reproductive technologies
• Teenage and older mothers
• Menopause
• Women and mental health issues
• Trauma

Possible Methodology/Methods
• Qualitative methodologies
• Visual methods
• Participatory qualitative methods
• Mixed methods

Applicant Experience Required
A good honours degree (2:1 and above) plus an MSc in Healthcare (Nursing or Midwifery)
Some experience of working in women's health services or maternity services would be extremely valuable.



AGEING, ACUTE AND LONG-TERM CONDITIONS

Nearly two thirds of patients now survive a critical illness. This equates to approximately 30,000 people per annum within the United Kingdom (NICE, 2009) and 4.85 million people in the United States (Daniels et al., 2018). At least half of these survivors are likely to suffer from post intensive care syndrome (PICS) (Daniels et al., 2018), affecting the health related quality of life of both the individual (Griffiths et al., 2013) and their family members (Davidson et al., 2012).

Possible Research Topics
• Fatigue and other problems related to critical illness recovery
• Patient and family involvement in critical care
• Improving transitions of care (ICU admission and ICU/hospital discharge)
• Information and communication
• Interventions focused on the patient and/or family

Possible Methodology/Methods
• Qualitative or quantitative methodologies
• Mixed methods
• Experienced based co-design

Applicant Experience Required
MSc (Essential)
Previous experience of undertaking research within a health or social care setting (Essential)
An understanding of critical illness and its sequelae, either personally or professionally (Essential)
Previous experience of working clinically in a health or social care setting (Desirable)
