Pharmacology

What will you learn?

The primary objective of the degree programme is to prepare independent pharmacologists working in the areas of experimental, translational, reverse translational or applied clinical research, or eventually working as independent academic experts who can apply their knowledge and experiences in pedagogical activities.

The graduates will publish the results of their doctoral thesis in excerpted journals and also present them at academic conferences.

The Entry Requirements for the Applicants:

Completed Master's studies in the fields of Internal, Dental, or Veterinary Medicine (or Pharmacology). The other applicable fields are Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Mathematics or Psychology (graduates of these non-medical fields are obliged to enrol in supplemental studies completed via an examination in Human Pathological Physiology).

Practical training

The doctoral students (based on the chosen doctoral thesis topic) work in vivo or with other appropriate laboratory methods, or other research methods under the supervision of the lecturer. Later in their studies, they work entirely independently.

During their studies, the doctoral students will apply for professional internship scholarship offers relevant to their doctoral thesis topic with the support of their lecturer.

According to their availability and their specific study plans, the doctoral students participate in the lecturing of pre-graduate students at the Faculty of Medicine MU to a limited extent.

Further information

Within 1 year of being accepted into the Doctoral Degree Programme (DDP), the students present their projects in cooperation with their lecturer - the thesis of their doctoral thesis - to the Doctoral Board, other students, and to the academic staff of the Pharmacological Institute. The Doctoral Board will then discuss the thesis and the methods used in the project with the doctoral student, or eventually, propose some changes for the methods used in the project.

During their studies, the doctoral students will report partial results of their doctoral thesis by presenting them at conferences both in the Czech Republic and abroad (for this very reason, the students will apply for financial aids at the Faculty of Medicine or other available offers).

During their studies, the doctoral students will also apply for professional internship scholarship offers relevant to their doctoral thesis topic with the support of their lecturer.

Within 2 years of being accepted into the DDP the student will present a manuscript of their original article (which may be in the overview form) to the lecturer and the Doctoral Board, and subsequently, the student will submit this article in an academic journal for publication

(a reviewed and at least Czech/Slovakian academic journal).

In the 4th year of studies at the latest, the Doctoral Board will require the DDP students to present their experimental results for publishing in a journal with a measured impact factor.

Only doctoral thesis for which the results of the original research have been published, or accepted for publishing, in a journal with a measured impact factor will be recommended to the Doctoral Board for the purposes of the defence, while the DDP student must have been the first author of this original article (at least once).

In the case of the student not meeting the above-mentioned conditions in the appropriate time limit, the Doctoral Board will propose the termination of their DDP studies after discussing the matter with the lecturer.

The preparation and successful defence of the doctoral thesis take place in the last year of studies.

The study requirements related to the Pharmacology course taught in the individual study disciplines at the Faculty of Medicine MU (in accordance with the study regulations of the Faculty of Medicine MU).

Requirements for the state doctoral examination in Pharmacology:

An oral defence of knowledge spanning the current insights in Pharmacology (according to the recommended literature) in front of at least a 5 member examination committee, consisting of MU experts and at least 2 members from other workplaces.
