Research areas

Film and TV Studies at Brunel has established a substantial body of research in a range of topics, including numerous major contributions to the field. Areas in which staff have major work recognized in the field include British, European, Hollywood, American independent, Hong Kong, African and Third cinema; horror, comedy, the integration of video practice and theory, Marxism and the media, contemporary British and American television, the media ‘effects' debate and media regulation. Some staff are also filmmakers, particularly in documentary, and/or use documentary itself as a form of research.

Theatre at Brunel explores performance in potentially radical and transformative ways, providing you with a friendly and wide-ranging personal tutoring system. Situated in a ‘village' campus setting with access to London's cultural centres, we see live performances to spark discussions and inform assignments and projects. The programme dynamically integrates theatre practice with academic criticality, empowering you to ‘own' the knowledge and professional skills you choose to develop. You will be taught by experts in state-of-the-art facilities including a large main performance space, three black box studios and ample outdoor sites.

Division of Communication and Media Studies is home of the internationally recognised Centre for Comedy Studies Research supported by high-profile comedians including Jo Brand and Lee Mack. Our research examines the production, content, reception and wider socio-political implications of comedy in its variety of formats from television sketch shows to comedy thrillers.
