You are very welcome to undertake your PhD or MPhil in all aspects of ‘health' in its broadest sense and covers health research, health promotion, public health, health care law and ethics, health and social policy, and health services research and health economics.

Research areas

The Public Health and Health Promotion programme sits in the College of Health and Life Sciences, one of the most research active units in the University. We aim to conduct policy–relevant, applied research with methodological rigour. Most of our studies fall within the broad domain of critical public health and includes three cross-cutting research themes within the Institute of Environment, Health and Societies:

Health Economics

  • Economic Evaluation of public health programmes / interventions / policies , specifically related to behaviour change interventions
  • Public health policy analyses
  • Measurement and valuation of health
  • Research evaluation, including payback from research

Ageing Studies

  • Ageing healthily – understanding beliefs and behaviours that impact on healthy ageing
  • Good care – developing effective ways of social care and transport and financial services
  • Ethical and legal issues – advance care planning and detecting and preventing financial elder abuse

Welfare, Health and Wellbeing

  • Health behaviour, experiences and interventions
  • Sport, health and wellbeing
  • Social change and wellbeing I the global south
  • Youth welfare, health and wellbeing
  • Wellbeing in general
