About the Programme

Are you ready to address problems of real biological or engineering importance? Or perhaps investigate the underlying mathematical and phenomenological processes of societal issues?

By joining the research-active mathematicians at Brunel University London you will be involved in cutting-edge research covering a range of topics including applied analysis, computational mathematics, continuum mechanics and mathematical physics, financial mathematics, operational research and applied statistics. We address problems of biological or engineering importance and investigate the underlying mathematical and phenomenological processes. There is a strong emphasis on the development of innovative analytic, asymptotic, computational and hybrid methods. Our research also focuses on random matrix theory, quantum information theory, mathematical foundations of quantum mechanics, mesoscopic disordered systems, statistical mechanics, graph theory, matroid theory, and infinite-dimensional Riemannian geometry, algebraic geometry, and orthogonal polynomials.

Join one of our research areas:

Applied and Numerical Analysis

Focus on the analysis of mathematical models of biological, chemical or physical processes described by differential, integral and integrodifferential equations, and in the development, analysis and implementation of numerical methods for their approximate solutions.

Financial Mathematics and Operational Research

Focus on developing computationally efficient methods for pricing financial derivatives and theoretical investigation into the probabilistic interpretation of certain important financial models. Undertake activities such as simulation or optimisation in modelling and solve a complex decision making problem.

Mathematical Physics and Applied Mathematics

Engage in the development of innovative analytical methods for a broad range of problems arising from engineering and physical sciences. Take part in the study of complex quantum systems, including quantum chaos, random matrix theory, quantum information and computing as well as research on related fundamental questions in geometry and mathematical physics.

Statistics and Data Science

Deep dive into the strategic growth area of statistical methods and models for data science, and make a contribution to the field of experimental design, high-dimensional statistics, inference under censoring and missing data, regression analysis beyond the mean, applied Bayesian inference, statistics of networks and machine learning for complex data situations.
