The Cultural, Communication and Computing Research Institute (C3RI) invite applications for two fully funded studentships.

We are particularly interested to receive applications that explore the following areas:

  • Media practices, cultures and audiences
  • Work that explores questions of power, identity and difference, including in relation to empathy, risk and conflict
  • Folklore, contemporary legend and media
  • Design, sustainability and social change
  • Creative practice for health and well-being
  • Critical arts practice including exploration of performance, politics, infrastructure and environment
  • Experience of technology, instruments, computing and social media
  • Encounters with Heritage and heritage technologies
  • Virtual reality, augmented reality and serious games design in e.g. education, health and heritage contexts

Our doctoral community returned the highest level of student satisfaction in the subject areas of Art & Design, Communication, Media and Cultural Studies and Information Management in the 2017 Postgraduate Research Experience Survey, reflecting particularly high satisfaction with research culture. Art and design students are based in the iconic brutalist Park Hill flats in a longstanding, valued partnership with artist led gallery S1 Artspace. All students benefit from regular seminars and cross-disciplinary research training, including our innovative conference format on the topics of research METHOD and IMPACT. Our students' research is frequently outward looking, thriving in or responding to significant issues and challenges in the cultural sector, healthcare, political, scientific and commercial organisations.

Entry Requirements:
Applicants should have at least a 2:1 Honours degree and a Masters qualification in a relevant subject area. Where English is not your first language, you must show current evidence of English language ability at the point of application equivalent to IELTS 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each component.

Funding Notes

The PhD studentships each provide a tax-free stipend, at the national minimum doctoral stipend rate, for three years, plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate of £4,327 and project costs of up to £500 per annum. The national minimum doctoral stipend for 2019/20 is £15,009. We welcome applications from international students but the studentship will not cover the full cost of International fees. Students will therefore need to contribute towards the cost of the tuition fee and need to indicate at the point of application how they plan to do this. The tuition fee for international students commencing study in 2019/20 is £12,500 per year.
