The School is composed of five units: Communication and Media, English, Geography and Environment, Politics and International Studies, Social and Policy Studies. It is a partner in the Central England NERC Training Alliance (CENTA) for doctoral training and the Midlands Graduate School ESRC Doctoral training Partnership.

Applications are invited from outstanding scholars working in any area of Art History and Visual Culture, Communications and Media, English, Human and Physical Geography, Politics and International Studies, Social and Policy Studies.

The School has research strengths in eight main areas:

-         Art History and Visual Culture

-         Communication and Cultures

-         Democracy, Crisis and Security

-         Environmental Processes and Management

-         Families, Young People and Children

-         Genders and Identities

-         Migration, Identities and Governance

-         Textual Editing and Interpretation

We are especially keen to receive proposals in the following areas:

-         Anarchism

-         Contemporary Literary Prizes

-         Critical Organization Studies

-         Cybernetics

-         Geopolitics and Security

-         Literary Modernism

-         Populism

-         Social Movements

-         UK Defence, Foreign and Security Policy

Entry requirements:

Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 Honours degree (or equivalent) in the major subject of their research field, or in a related subject. A relevant Masters degree would be advantageous. 

Funding information:

The studentship is for 3 years and provides a tax-free stipend of £15285 per annum for the duration of the studentship plus tuition fees at the UK rate. International (including EU) students may apply however the total value of the studentship will cover the International Tuition Fee Only.
