We offer PhDs in Engineering (MPhil/PhD) across seven research themes: Communication & Information Engineering; Computational Engineering; Data-Centric Engineering; Design & Mechatronics; Energy & Power Systems; Manufacturing, Materials & Systems; and Signals & Control.
About the Programme
The Department of Engineering has an international reputation and world-leading research across engineering topics ranging from bioprocessing, robotics, control, communications and signal processing to thermal engineering, energy storage, power grids, electric drives, materials, tribology and fluid dynamics. Our research receives funding from research councils (EPSRC, BBSRC), industry and charitable organisations.
Much of our department research is multidisciplinary, sitting at the interfaces of engineering with mathematics, chemistry, physics, computer science, arts and medicine. We also have research that reaches into geography, policy and human behaviour.

Funding Notes
The Studentships are funded for up to 3.5 years. Funding includes tuition fees, tax-free stipend set at UKRI rate plus London weighting, as well as an allowance for research-related travel. The eligibility criteria of most of the available studentships include the requirement that an applicant must be classed as a home student.
Applicants should be aware there may be other costs which will not be covered by the studentship, for example, visa fees, healthcare surcharge, or relocation costs.
