The Mathematics Education Centre and the Centre for Mathematical Cognition, at Loughborough University, invite applications for two funded studentships.

The Mathematics Education Centre (https://www.lboro.ac.uk/departments/mec/ ) is one of the largest groups of mathematics education researchers in the UK - with an international reputation for the research into and practice of the learning and teaching of mathematics and statistics.

The Centre for Mathematical Cognition (https://www.lboro.ac.uk/research/cmc/ ) is part of the MEC and was launched in 2019 with a £6.6m grant from Research England. The aim of the Centre for Mathematical Cognition is to harness insights from basic research on cognition to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics, bringing together researchers who conduct research in three different areas:

·      basic research on mathematical cognition;

·      the design of research-based educational resources;

·      and the evaluation of educational interventions.

Two studentships are available to students who wish to pursue PhD study in an area of research aligned with the aims of the MEC/CMC.

Academics within the MEC and CMC study mathematical cognition and mathematics education at all educational stages, from preschool to university level. Research interests of academics include mathematical thinking and reasoning, numerical cognition, mathematics teaching and teacher development. Further details of academics’ research interests can be found here: https://www.lboro.ac.uk/departments/mec/postgraduate/research/research-expertise/

Details of research areas where we would particularly welcome applications can be found here: https://www.lboro.ac.uk/departments/mec/postgraduate/research/ with some potential projects indicated here: https://www.lboro.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/research-degrees/phd-opportunities/#research-area=maths-education-centre.
