POLSIS invites applications for one 3-year studentship in order to undertake a PhD within International Relations and Political Science, broadly conceived. As part of the CREST consortium, POLSIS, a Department based in the School of Government and Society, is seeking to appoint a series of new posts, including the aforementioned funded PhD. This opportunity will contribute to advancing the work of CREST.
The CREST Consortium
The Centre for Research and Evidence on Security Threats (CREST) is a new, interdisciplinary research consortium that will be at the forefront of the UK's efforts to understand, mitigate and counter contemporary security threats. Coordinated by Lancaster University, and involving the Universities of Birmingham, Cranfield, Portsmouth and West of England, the Centre will enable world-leading academics, policy makers and practitioners to engage with the key issues of our times.
Alongside conducting new research, the Centre's activities will also stimulate public and professional debate, connect disciplinary communities, inform policy and practice, and provide training to research leaders of the future. CREST was commissioned by the ESRC in partnership with the UK security and intelligence agencies.
The Studentship
Applications are invited in the broad area of International Relations and Political Science. Applicants with other disciplinary backgrounds (Sociology; Language-based Area Studies; Cultural Studies; Anthropology; Psychology) will be considered, although preference will be given to applicants with an expertise, or strong interest in new social movements, narrative ‘framing', transnational activism and social networks. CREST particularly welcomes applications from candidates wishing to apply social, cultural and behavioural approaches to study historical and contemporary security threats.

Funding notes:
Applicants for this studentship must:
• Hold a 1st or 2.1 university degree (or equivalent);
• Hold a Masters degree in either International Relations, Political Science or a cognate discipline
In addition, it is desirable that the applicant:
• Have experience of advanced research skills (PG level or equivalent)
