About the Programme

Eligibility criteria

  • Students who have a Masters degree, or at least an Upper Second Class Undergraduate Honours degree (or equivalent) are invited to apply.
  • We endeavour to be inclusive and flexible regarding applicants with caring obligations, disabilities and other considerations.
  • All non-native speakers of English must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • You must have applied for both a place on the PhD programme as well as a scholarship by the scholarship application deadline of 31 May 2023.

Scholarship Focus

The Politics and International Relations team at Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU) welcome applications for a new PhD scholarship. 

We wish to encourage applications which align with the following research themes:

  • Security Studies – particularly in relation to outer space. This may include topics relating to outer space technology and regulation or projects relating to the militarization of space. The successful candidate will be located in the Politics and International Relations team. The key project lead is BISA Astro Politics Working Group convenor Dr Sarah Lieberman. ()
  • Applied Political Theory – specifically the connection between political theory and social and political activism. This may include (but is not restricted to) issues of ethics and morality in activism, civil disobedience and resistance, activist ideology, and artistic practice and activism. The successful candidate will be based in the Politics and International Relations team. The project team includes Professor David Bates () and Dr Demetris Tillyris ().

You will be required to submit a research proposal using the below application link. We recommend that you discuss your proposal with a member of the Faculty before application. After application you will be asked to interview with a potential supervisor in the Faculty.

  • Select ‘International Relations’ as your subject area
  • Select the award
  • Select your preferred mode of study and your preferred start date
  • Tick the box on the proposal form to indicate an application for a scholarship alongside a place on the PhD programme
