About the Programme

Our Department of Psychology is a research-intensive department where students are taught by people at the forefront of their fields in well-equipped facilities.

We offer the following research degree programmes:

PhD in Psychology

  • Alongside your PhD research, this includes on-going training opportunities to enhance your research skills and broad knowledge of psychology, as well as academic tools sessions to equip you for careers inside and outside academia. 
  • First year modules: Research Design and Statistics and Practical skills in experimental, cognitive and social psychology 
  • You can also attend any relevant final-year undergraduate and MSc courses to enhance your knowledge of a specific area
  • Weekly research seminars in the Department of Psychology which includes a ‘meet the speaker' event where you'll get the opportunity to talk informally with high-profile academics and other external speakers

PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuroimaging

  • Alongside your PhD research, this includes training sessions to enhance your research skills and broad knowledge of cognitive neuroscience and neuroimaging, as well as academic tools sessions to equip you for careers inside and outside academia
  • First year module: Programming in Neuroimaging
  • You can also attend any relevant final-year undergraduate and MSc courses to enhance your knowledge of a specific area
  • Weekly research seminars at the York Neuroimaging Centre
  • Weekly research seminars in the Department of Psychology which includes a ‘meet the speaker' event where you'll get the opportunity to talk informally with high-profile academics and other external speakers

PhD in Psycholinguistics

  • Run jointly by the Departments of Language and Linguistic Science, Psychology and Education
  • Training opportunities from across the three departments, including psycholinguistic research methods, data science, and a range of advanced discipline-specific modules
  • Extensive facilities include eyetracking and pupilometry; EEG and psychophysiology; state-of-the art equipment for individual and group testing, focus group monitoring and behavioural experiments; polysomnography in a three-bedroom sleep lab
  • Regular seminars, events and guest speakers
