    Self-Funded PhD Students Only

Profile Description

The Interdisciplinary Global Development Centre (IGDC) is an innovative new research hub guided by principles of social justice, fairness and environmental sustainability. We bring together expertise from across the fields of arts and humanities, social sciences and sciences at the University of York, with major input from the Departments of Politics, History and Environment and Geography.

We're committed to crossing traditional subject boundaries to rise to today's major development challenges. We have carried out research that touches upon all regions of the world and have partners across the Global South, in the UK and Europe.

Doctoral study

As part of the Centre's growth, we're excited to accept our first cohort of PhD students in September 2019. We're looking for candidates who share our commitment to global justice.

As a PhD student at the Centre, you'll receive training in different types of methodologies such as:

  • Quantitative methods, including original data collection and secondary data analysis
  • Qualitative methods, including interviews, focus groups, media analysis and archival research

You'll also benefit from the supervision of two IGDC members.

To apply to the programme, you'll need at least a 2:1 or equivalent undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. A Masters and some experience of using quantitative and qualitative research methods and participating in fieldwork is desirable.
