Funded PhD Programme (UK Students Only)

About the Programme

In the last few years, the concept of place-based thinking and making has been of growing interest. This has accelerated following emergence from lockdown, which had a detrimental impact on the economy of culture, especially the arts. Place, as opposed to space, is where people, location and resources are brought together in the construction of a sense of identity and a wider purpose. Place-based thinking examines ways in which different groups can come together and form connections and mutually meaningful activities that enrich the cultural landscape.

This PhD studentship opportunity invites applications that explore questions and issues within the theory and/or practice of place-making within the context of the arts (meant inclusively). Potential areas of enquiry could look at models for place-based activities; the role of the cultural industries within place-based activities; the relationship between cultural groups and organisations within an environment; and the role of heritage in partnership making. These are only some of many lines of enquiry and responses that are welcomed.

Place-based making is part of the culture of the School of Arts and Humanities and, as part of the PhD, the expectation is that the successful candidate will be involved in related activities.

Three scholarships are available as part of this scheme. One of these is the Dr Jonathan Lindley Scholarship. Dr Lindley was a member of staff in Graphics at Huddersfield. He had a special interest in Music and Graphics and we encourage applications in that area vis-à-vis place-making, although an applicant to this studentship from another area would still be acceptable.

Successful candidates will receive a full fee waiver and a stipend equivalent to UKRI rates (currently £17,668 p.a.) for three years. These scholarships are open to home students only.

The closing date for applications is 9th June 2023.

Please contact Professor Rina Arya (r.arya@hud.ac.uk) for an informal discussion.

Criteria and further details

Applications will be assessed in terms of the quality of the proposal, the feasibility of the proposed study and the proposal’s alignment with the Scholarship scheme (as described above). Candidates are encouraged to contact the potential supervisor to discuss the suitability of their proposal.

We positively encourage applications from groups under-represented in postgraduate research, including (but not limited to) women, LGBTQ+ candidates, Global Majority / BAME candidates, candidates with disabilities, candidates with caring responsibilities, and care leavers.

Candidates will normally be expected to live a commutable distance from campus and be on campus regularly in order to be an active member of the School’s research community.

You will need to dedicate 35 hours per week to your degree and must not also be working full-time. In principle, applications for part-time study can be considered, subject to approval. Please contact sah-dge@hud.ac.uk to discuss this option.

Scholarship recipients will be expected to contribute up 6 hours per week (unpaid) of activities to support areas such as teaching, research, public engagement or administration.

You are encouraged to design a PhD project that can be completed in standard time; the Scholarship applies only to standard time. You would pay for any period of additional or writing-up time at the end of your research degree at the relevant rate, if you choose to take this in addition to your standard time.
