Funded PhD Programme (UK Students Only)

About the Programme

The School of Arts and Humanities is seeking to award a minimum of 6 fee-waiver scholarships to home (UK only) PhD students beginning their studies in July 2023. Candidates must be proposing high-quality research aligned to the School’s key areas of expertise. Find out more about the School of Arts and Humanities here

This is a competitive scheme and applications will be assessed in terms of the quality of the proposal, the feasibility of the proposed study, supervisory capacity and the proposal’s alignment with the School’s research areas.

Further details and criteria

These Scholarships are only available for July entry and cannot be deferred. The Scholarships are available only for full-time study.

Candidates are encouraged to contact the potential supervisor to discuss the suitability of their proposal. All candidates will be interviewed as part of the selection process.

Distance learning applicants and applicants for PhD by Publication are not eligible for this scheme in the School of Arts and Humanities.

We positively encourage applications from groups under-represented in postgraduate research, including (but not limited to) women, LGBTQ+ candidates, Global Majority / BAME candidates, candidates with disabilities, candidates with caring responsibilities, and care leavers.

Candidates will normally be expected to live a commutable distance from campus and be on campus regularly in order to be an active member of the School’s research community.

Full-time students will need to dedicate 35 hours per week to the degree and must not also be working full time.

Scholarship recipients will be expected to contribute up 6 hours per week (unpaid) of activities to support areas such as teaching, research, public engagement or administration.

You are encouraged to design a project that can be completed in standard time; the Scholarship applies only to standard time. You would pay for any period of additional or writing-up time at the end of your research degree at the relevant rate, if you choose to take this in addition to your standard time.

The closing date for applications is 24th April 2023. Please direct any queries to .

To ensure your application is considered for this scholarship, please ensure that you select your chosen subject area in the application form. Where the online application form asks about payment of fees, select 'other' and provide the name of the scholarship that you wish to be considered for in the free text box. Upload a research proposal with your application. Guidance is provided by the University for writing research proposals.
