Funded PhD Programme (UK Students Only)

About the Programme

Prospective PhD researchers are invited to submit applications for one of two UK domiciliary fees only scholarships in the School of Design at The Glasgow School of Art. We particularly welcome proposals that support our aims to:

  • encourage and support research at PhD level. We have a longstanding tradition of strength in creative practice research at all degree levels. As part of the School of Design’s five-year strategic Research Plan we are supporting further growth for our PhD community in Design
  • increase the number of applications for PhD study in areas of current and emerging strengths, including: Visual and Material Culture (Textiles, Fashion, Communication Design, Silversmithing and Jewellery, Interiors); Heritage (Design History and Theory); Health Humanities (Society, Care, Wellbeing); Digital Culture (Interaction Design, AI, Creative Coding)
  • widen participation and increase the number of applicants from under-represented communities in postgraduate research in the humanities, particularly applicants from UKbased Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups

Full time - 3 years

Part time - 6 years

Applications must be submitted online using our standard PhD process. Details on how to apply can be found here: https://www.gsa.ac.uk/study/phd-and-mphil-postgraduate-research-degrees/how-to-apply/

Please ensure that your proposal is clearly marked ‘School of Design PhD Scholarship’.

Applications must be received by Friday 2 June 2023

Applicants must be available for interview (online) in the week commencing 12 June 2023

If you have any questions regarding your application, please contact Dr Elizabeth Hodson, PhD Coordinator in the School of Design, at
